Premier League side, Everton, Thursday confirmed the sack of coach, Roberto Martinez.
The Spaniard’s three-year spell in charge came to an end after Wednesday’s 3-0 defeat away to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Martinez joined the Merseysiders club in 2013 after winning FA cup with relegated Wigan Athletic.
The 42-year-old coach failed to resume training on Thursday ahead of the Toffees final game of the season against Norwich City on Sunday, prompting media reports that he had been sacked.
An official statement on the club website later reads: “Everton Football Club regrets to announce that Roberto Martinez has left his position as First Team Manager with immediate effect.
“The Chairman and the Board of Directors would like to place on record their thanks for the dedication and commitment Roberto has shown during his three seasons with the Club.
“Roberto has been a great ambassador for the Club, conducting himself, at all times, with the utmost integrity and dignity.
“He secured the Club its highest ever Premier League points total, a place in the last 16 of the Europa League and appearances in both domestic cup semi-finals.
“He has also played a key role in the development of several young players, managing their progression to the Everton First Team and International honours.”
Martinez oversaw a dismal season with Everton, who are 12th on the league table and failed to reach the FA cup final.
The club have won just five league games at home all season and are guaranteed to finish with their lowest points tally at Goodison Park since the introduction of three points for a win in 1981.
Everton’s annual awards event scheduled for Thursday evening – where protests against Martinez had been expected before his dismissal was announced – has been postponed.
