Former minister of finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has corrected an error in a tweet about food distribution in Rwanda.
Mrs Okonjo-Iweala had tweeted early Wednesday of “responsible food distribution” in Rwanda “with social distancing to assist lower-income households.”
The packages were donated by Imam Jaiteh Charitable Foundation to Muslims in The Gambia during Ramadan in 2019.
The former minister then tweeted later in the day to correct the error in the post, although she did not openly admit to the error.
“Thanks to those who have drawn my attention to the food distribution picture I tweeted earlier today,” she said.
“A friend sent it to me that it’s from Rwanda. Whether Gambia or Rwanda, the point I want us to focus on is that it is a safe way of handling food distribution.”
President Muhammadu Buhari’s media aide, Bashir Ahmad, was part of those who brought her attention to the origin of the picture.
“While it is true that the Rwandan government is giving out palliatives, the picture does not originate from the east African country but from Gambia,” he wrote.
