Olisa Metuh leaves Kuje prison

A former spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party Olisa Metuh has left the Nigeria Correctional Service in Kuje, Abuja after meeting N250 million bail conditions.

Justice Nkeonye Maha of the Federal High Court, Abuja granted him bail with one surety in like sum, following a motion on notice with charge number FHC/ABJ/CR/05/2016 dated and filed on December 21 by Mr Metuh’s lawyers led by Oyechi Ikpeazu.

The judge also granted Metuh’s application to travel within and outside the jurisdiction of the court for 45 days only, beginning from the date of the order.

A Court of Appeal in Abuja had on December 16 nullified Metuh’s conviction and seven-year jail term imposed on him by Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Former governor of Ekiti State Ayo Fayose welcomed Metuh’s departure from prison, adding that tough times don’t last.

“Welcome back home Olisa Metuh, tough time don’t last,” Mr Fayose wrote on Thursday.

“And to Justice Okon Abang, you will one day reap the rewards of the hardship and suffering your miscarriage of justice has made many Nigerians to go through.”

A three-man panel of the appellate court led by Justice Stephen Adah had ruled that the proceedings of the Federal High Court leading to the conviction of Metuh and his company, Destra Investment Limited, were tainted with bias, and therefore must not be allowed to stand.

The court also ordered a retrial by another judge other than Justice Abang.

Metuh was on February 25, 2020, imprisoned for fraudulently receiving N400 million from a former national security adviser Sambo Dasuki.
