Former minister of communication and technology, Omobola Johnson, has called out the Eko Electricity Distribution Company over its policy of estimated billing for power consumers.
Mrs Johnson tweeted on Thursday saying she only returned to her office on Tuesday after the lockdown in Lagos to find electricity bill of N29,000 for the month of April.
“Got back to my office on Tuesday after 6 weeks of lockdown to see April bill from @EKEDP for N29k! Not even a light bulb came on in the whole month,” the ex-minister wrote.
“Then they had the audacity to disconnect the power because I refused to pay! This estimated billing nonsense really has to stop.”
Electricity distribution companies in Nigeria have generally defended the estimated billing policy, saying it is the only way to ensure electricity bills are paid as most people are without metres.
The 56-year-old was Nigeria’s minister of communication and technology from 2011 to 2015 under former President Goodluck Jonathan.
