Veteran songwriter, singer, and actress Onyeka Onwenu will be laid to rest this Friday in Lagos.
The funeral service is scheduled to take place at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, followed by a private burial at a vault in Ikoyi.
During a condolence visit by the Musical Copyright Society Nigeria (MCSN) led by King Sunny Ade and Orits Wiliki in August, Onyeka’s family disclosed that the burial would occur within a month, fulfilling her wish for a swift and celebratory farewell.
Abraham Ogunlende, one of Onyeka’s sons, expressed his family’s gratitude to those who came to pay their respects.
He acknowledged the presence of those in attendance and thanked them for their “kind” and “wise words.”
He also shared the family’s commitment to honouring their mother’s desire for a quick burial.
“She didn’t want people to mourn for long but to celebrate her life, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do. We are already making arrangements to celebrate her life. It is the most important thing for us to do right now,” he added.
Abraham confirmed that the family is finalising plans for the funeral.
Other notable figures present during the condolence visit included flautist Tee Mac, music executive Kenny Ogungbe, and MCSN Director-General Mayowa Ayilaran.
Onyeka Onwenu passed away on July 30 after a performance at the 80th birthday party of industrialist Stella Okoli.
She was 72 years old.
