The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has commended the appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the Alaafin-elect of Oyo, describing it as a momentous step in preserving Yoruba heritage.
In a statement released on Saturday by Moses Olafare, the director of media and public affairs at the Ooni’s Palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Oba Ogunwusi also congratulated the Alaafin-elect on his new role as the custodian of Oyo’s rich cultural legacy.
The Ooni praised Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for fostering an enabling environment and supporting a smooth transition that led to the emergence of the new king. He also acknowledged the patience and maturity displayed by the royal families, kingmakers, and people of Oyo during the sacred selection process, which spanned over two years.
“The decision heralds a new era of prosperity, unity, and cultural preservation for the people of Oyo,” the Ooni stated.
Oba Ogunwusi underscored the deep historical and cultural ties between Oyo and Ile-Ife, describing the Alaafin’s throne as a vital pillar of Yoruba traditional governance and heritage.
“The appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade signifies the continuation of this sacred bond and the unwavering strength of the Yoruba cultural legacy,” he said.
The Ooni expressed confidence in the Alaafin-elect’s ability to uphold the enduring legacy of his predecessors, particularly the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III. He urged the new monarch to be a unifying figure, rallying all stakeholders, including those who contested the throne, for the growth and development of Oyo.
“You must bring everyone on board; Oyomesi must remain united under your watch, whether they supported you or not. You must be magnanimous in victory,” Oba Ogunwusi advised.
He also emphasised the importance of fostering peace and collaboration among the kingmakers, ensuring impartiality, and serving as a beacon of hope, justice, and development for the people.
The Ooni called on all sons and daughters of Oyo, both home and abroad, to support the new Alaafin and work collectively to sustain the town’s status as a cornerstone of Yoruba greatness.
“It is through collective support and collaboration that Oyo will continue to thrive and maintain its place in Yoruba history,” he said, reiterating his commitment to unity among Yoruba traditional rulers and the prosperity of the Yoruba people.
