Actress Opeyemi Aiyeola has called off her planned charity initiative, citing the ongoing detention of Queen Naomi Silekunola and chief executive officer of Agidigbo FM, Oriyomi Hamzat over a tragic stampede that claimed 35 lives.
In a live Instagram chat on Friday, Opeyemi expressed concerns about the risks associated with charity events, particularly in light of the controversy surrounding the incident.
She also addressed accusations against Naomi and Hamzat, which some netizens linked to superstitious beliefs and alleged rituals.
Opeyemi stated her preference for helping her family directly rather than organising public giveaways, saying:
“I am no longer doing giveaways. I am done. I have family members that need help. I will do my giveaway with them.
“If helping people will land someone in prison, I am out. People should learn from the case of Alhaji Hamzat Oriyomi and The Queen Naomi.”
Queen Naomi is currently held at the Agodi Correctional Facility in Ibadan alongside Hamzat and Islamic High School principal Abdullahi Fasasi.
A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Iyaganku ordered their detention on Tuesday, pending legal advice from the Oyo State director of public prosecutions.
The trio faces charges of conspiracy, murder, and negligence following the December 18 stampede at a Christmas funfair hosted by Naomi’s foundation, Women in Need of Guidance and Support (WINGS), in partnership with Agidigbo FM.
Police reports revealed that 35 minors lost their lives in the incident, with six others critically injured.
