A former Abia State governor, Senator Orji Kalu, has reunited with his family following his release from prison custody on Wednesday night.
The Senate Chief Whip was freed from the Kuje Custodial Centre at about 7:30 pm in line with an order for his release by Justice Mohammed Liman of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.
“Ex-governor Orji Kalu was released from custody at exactly 5.05 pm on Wednesday. He was discharged after we received the court warrant on his release,” spokesman of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Austin Njoku, said.
Kalu was jailed for 12 years last December following his conviction of N7.1 billion fraud.
His firm, Slok Nigeria Limited, was also implicated alongside a former Director of Finance at the Abia State Government House, Jones Udeogu.
Kalu’s conviction was, however, nullified by the Supreme Court on May 8 on the grounds that the judge who presided over the case lacked jurisdiction.
