Nigeria international Victor Osimhen has said he is disappointed by the treatment of the Super Eagles at Al Abraq International Airport in Libya.
After defeating the Mediterranean Knights of Libya 1-0 last Friday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, the Eagles departed for Libya on Sunday morning ahead of the second leg on Tuesday, October 15.
However, since they arrived in Libya the players said they were held hostage at the airport without food, drink and internet access.
Osimhen voiced his frustration over the situation on Monday.
“I am disappointed by the unfair treatment my brothers and coaches faced at the Libyan airport last night. Actions like this go against the spirit of sportsmanship. My support is with my team, and I know they’ll stay strong despite these obstacles,” he said on social media.
The Galatasaray star urged the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to intervene swiftly.
“I call on CAF and other football bodies to intervene, as my teammates and officials are still stranded at the airport in Libya. This is uncalled for and inhumane. We stand together, stronger than ever,” he added.
While the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has condemned the treatment of the players, the Libya Football Federation (LFF) said in a statement on Monday that it was incorrect to say there was a deliberate attempt to frustrate the Nigerian team.
“We firmly reject any claims that suggest foul play or sabotage in this situation. It is important to highlight that just last week, our own national team faced significant challenges upon our arrival in Nigeria for the third match of the Africa Cup of Nations qualification,” the statement said.
