Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen has matched the legendary Segun Odegbami on the all-time Super Eagles scoring chart, with both players now tied at 23 goals.
The 25-year-old striker reached this milestone during Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 qualifying match against Benin Republic on Thursday.
His crucial header in the 81st minute ensured a 1-1 draw for the team.
The match, held in Côte d’Ivoire, saw Nigeria trailing early after a goal resulting from goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali’s error.
Despite missing earlier opportunities, Osimhen’s determination and aerial ability came through as he delivered the equaliser, salvaging a point for the Super Eagles.
Osimhen has achieved this impressive feat in just 37 appearances, putting him in second place alongside Odegbami who got the tally in 46 matches.
He now sets his sights on the top spot held by Rashidi Yekini, who scored 37 goals in 58 matches during his illustrious career.
Speaking after the match, Osimhen reaffirmed his commitment to scoring more goals as Nigeria prepares to host Rwanda in their final qualifying game.
The Super Eagles have already secured their place in AFCON 2025 as Group D winners with 11 points.
Osimhen’s rise to prominence, marked by his consistency and ability to perform under pressure, has solidified his role as a key figure in Nigeria’s squad. The Galatasaray star will aim to surpass Odegbami and further his legacy when Nigeria faces Rwanda next week.
His journey from a young talent to a record-chasing scorer showcases his dedication and skill, making him an integral part of Nigeria’s quest for success in the upcoming tournament in Morocco.
