The National Hospital in Abuja has dismissed claims that the corpse of gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, was singing ‘Ekwueme’ while in the mortuary.
The spokesman for the hospital, Dr Taiwo Haastrup said this to newsmen on Monday, May 16, adding that there was no proof that Osinachi’s body was singing in the morgue.
Osinachi was a lead singer at the Dunamis International Gospel Centre in Abuja, who died on April 8. She is said to have been subjected to years of domestic violence by her husband, Peter Nwachukwu.
Following her death, her corpse was deposited in the National Hospital mortuary. Reports said the mortuary attendants alleged that Osinachi’s corpse was singing her hit song, ‘Ekwueme’, in the middle of the night.
Reacting to the reports, Haastrup dismissed it saying, “Medically, there is nothing like that; it’s just an imagination of people. Somebody that is dead and is a corpse, how would such a person be singing in the night?
“There is no medical backup to that; it’s an imagination (sic) that may be due to the church she attended while alive, and the songs may just be giving people ideas, but there is no proof in any way. It just can’t be proven in any way.
“Somebody that is dead is dead and has become a corpse; it’s inside a morgue, it can’t sing and can’t move so it’s an imagination of people.”
Speaking on the autopsy report on the deceased, he said: “It’s a coroner case, and it’s confidential; we can’t reveal anything there. The IPO in charge will give it to the IGP, who will turn it to the court. The result has been submitted all the same, and our people did it confidentially.”
Meanwhile, Osinachi’s husband Peter has spent one month and seven days in police custody.
Mr. Nwachukwu, who is accused of wife battery, was arrested on Sunday, April 10.
Confirming Nwachukwu’s arrest, FCT police spokesperson Josephine Adeh said on April 11, “He is now in our custody. The younger brother of the deceased reported the matter and we have commenced investigation.”
In a statement written at the police station in Lugbe, Abuja, Nwachukwu said his wife took ill in denied killing his wife, saying she took ill in November 2021. He said he first took her to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), later to Gwagwalada General Hospital, and then to National Hospital, where she died.
He, however, did not disclose the nature of her illness. Osinachi’s sister said the singer did not die of cancer as rumoured.
Nwachukwu was last seen publicly on April 20 when he was paraded before the minister of women affairs Pauline Tallen, his children and in-laws during their visit to the inspector general of police Usman Baba.
