Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, on Sunday visited the Lekki home of the late Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, to commiserate with his family.
Their visit came two days after the 96-year-old Yoruba socio-political leader passed away at his Lagos residence on Friday.
Also among those who paid their respects were former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel, Labour Party’s Lagos governorship candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi.
Rhodes-Vivour, in a post on X, said the visit was an opportunity to honour the late elder statesman and pray for his family.
“Earlier today, we joined the Adebanjo family in thanksgiving and prayers for God’s comfort and strength for the family,” he wrote.
“Pa Adebanjo lived a full life and was always excited to share his values, vision, and ideology with the next generation. He was a principled man who embodied the ideals of equity, justice, and true federalism. We celebrate a life of impact, a life lived to the fullest.”
Obi, who had earlier described Adebanjo’s death as a great loss to the nation, reiterated his admiration for the late Afenifere leader’s unwavering commitment to a united and progressive Nigeria.
“I remain deeply grateful for his support during my presidential campaign. His endorsement was not merely a political gesture but a testament to his belief in the ideals of equity and inclusiveness.
“He stood firm in his convictions against all odds, demonstrating his dedication to the greater good of Nigeria.
“May his death not be in vain. Instead, let it serve as a renewed call to action for all who believe in justice and fairness.
“As we extend our condolences to his immediate family and the Afenifere organisation, may we find solace in the enduring impact of his remarkable life,” Obi said.
Adebanjo is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
