Having seen the backlash that greeted the wedding between the children of Governors Abdullahi Ganduje and Abiola Ajimobi of Kano and Oyo states respectively, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has opted for a low-key wedding for his daughter according to a report by thecable.ng.
The wedding of Ganduje’s daughter, Fatima, and her groom, Idris Ajimobi, drew President Muhammadu Buhari, Senate President Bukola Saraki, over 20 state governors and other high-ranking politicians to Kano last Saturday.
President Buhari and others were strongly criticised by a cross-section of Nigerians for making merry while communal clashes and Boko Haram claim lives and property in different parts of the country.
With the mood of the nation in mind, Osinbajo has reportedly ruled out any fanfare as his daughter, Damilola, is set to marry Oluseun Bakare on March 17.
“Left to the VP and his wife, it would have been the smallest and simplest of ceremonies, taking place in their backyard, especially given the current mood of the nation,” the online newspaper quoted a family insider as saying.
Many had looked forward to witnessing the joining together of Osinbajo’s daughter and the son of businesswomen and socialite, Bola Shagaya.
“For a man known for his unassuming nature and humble mien, these circumstances have invited the dilemma of how to moderate the occasion and balance out the wedding outlook considering the current mood of the nation,” the source continued.
To moderate the crowd, everything about the wedding will take place in the State House except the church service, it was reported.
“This should by itself limit the crowd and ensure that the event is not blown out of proportion,” the source said.
Like Osinbajo, the groom-to-be is a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
