The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has denied allegations that it set up a directorate of politics and government to aid Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s future political aspirations.
The church’s assistant general overseer in charge of administration and personnel, Pastor Johnson Odesola, had in a memo dated February 28 addressed to all regions, provinces, zones and other levels of the church, said the directorate was created for political education of its members.
“The essence of this directorate is to help coordinate the engagement of our people who are willing to be involved in politics as well as mobilize support for them when required,” the memo said.
Since the news broke, many on social media have accused the church of having Osinbajo’s political future in mind before creating the directorate.
Osinbajo is a pastor of the RCCG.
However, RCCG spokesman Pastor Olaitan Olubiyi told PUNCH on Friday that the allegations were not true.
Olubiyi also said RCCG has been creating political awareness for its members since the transition from military to civil rule in 1999 and there was nothing new about the development.
“The directorate has nothing to do with Osinbajo or anybody. I don’t know why people are linking something the church has been doing which every organisation should be doing to him,” said Olubiyi.
The spokesman added that Christians cannot afford to act ignorantly by staying off politics because the choice of political leadership affects the entire wellbeing of any people.
