National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said that more than 50 buildings were destroyed in the explosion at Abule Ado, near Trade Fair Complex on Lagos-Badagry highway.
Acting Coordinator of the Lagos Territorial Office of NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the damage in an interview with NAN on Sunday.
Mr Farinloye said the cause of the incident and casualty figure were currently unknown as “rescue operations are still going on in the affected area”.
According to him, the fire from the explosion spread to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) oil pipeline passing through the area.
The pipeline has now been shut down as a precautionary measure.
Farinloye said a combined team of the Lagos State Fire Service, Federal Fire Service and the Nigerian Navy Fire Tender are currently working to put out the inferno.
The explosion, which occurred around 9 am on Sunday, caused panic among Lagos residents after it shook many houses in Ijegun, Festac Town and other communities in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area and also in Agege.
