The Oyo State Government has condemned the attack on players and supporters of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) during a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Matchday 29 game against Ikorodu United at the Onikan Stadium in Lagos on Sunday.
Play was stopped before full time after home fans disrupted the game following the visitors’’ equalising goal.
Ajani Ibrahim struck two minutes from time to equalise for 3SC after Chinedu Onyelonu had put Ikorodu United ahead in the 25th minute.
The Onikan fans protested that the goal should not have stood and they stormed the pitch to disrupt proceedings.
Attempts to get the match restarted failed and it was abandoned due to crowd trouble.
In a statement Tuesday by the Oyo State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, ‘Yomi Oke, the government described the attack on the Oluyole Warriors as totally unacceptable, saying that it was a turn away from the good spirits of sportsmanship in Nigeria.
He pointed out that the state government did not support the uncivilised attitude displayed against its players in Lagos.
The state government lends its support to the express disapproval coming from different quarters, and Mr. Oke called on the League Management Company (LMC) to act swiftly on necessary action to be meted out to the offending supporters without further delays.
He affirmed that the Governor Abiola Ajimobi-led administration is a strong proponent of peace and sportsmanship which has rubbed off on 3SC players, officials and supporters.
Oke commended the players and supporters 3SC for being good ambassadors of the state in Lagos, and making the state government and its people proud during and after the match.
