Initial reports of fatalities could not be confirmed.
Heavily armed security personnel from the Prison Service, Army, Navy and Police guarded the area and restricted movement of people.
Civilians and vehicles were not allowed access into the premises except those who have proof that they are resident in the barracks.
The inmates were said to be protesting what they described as the highhandedness of the new Deputy Controller at the Maximum Security Prison, DCP Kayode Odeyemi.
