Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi, has admonished Nigerians to give head coach, Sunday Oliseh, more time to continue with his rebuilding process.
The former skipper has been criticised for the country’s poor ranking after winning just one out of three competitive games for the main Eagles team.
Nigeria is currently ranked 66th in the world and 14th in Africa but Onazi urged Nigerians to be patient with the coach who he described as “promising”.
“I will say Nigerians must have to be patient,” the former youth international told the official Super Eagles YouTube channel.
“He is a promising coach and he is going to give Nigeria what we actually want. We will try to do our best as we all listen to his instructions because he is a very good coach technically and otherwise.
“That is what we have to do to make sure that we get every match one step after the other.”
The Lazio midfielder, who is now deputy skipper of the team, revealed that Oliseh is like a father to the lads, a technically gifted coach and someone who is direct.
“Nigerians are wonderful people, I must say, but in some cases they are too quick to judge and I will want to say to them this coach is a coach that I see, a wonderful coach who is like a father who is technically sound.
“He is someone who tells you black is black, white is white, he doesn’t care who you are whether big or small, he takes everybody along. Everyone is important in the team, and no one is sure of his jersey in this team so everyone needs to fight for his jersey and that’s what we are actually doing.”
The Super Eagles will continue their 2017 AFCON qualifiers against Egypt on March 23, 2016 at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.
Onazi, who received a knock while on national team assignment, will miss the clash with the Pharaohs due to suspension.
