National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, says members of the party would determine its candidate in the forthcoming governorship election in Edo State.
Mr Secondus told The PUNCH in a telephone interview that he could not unilaterally decide if Governor Godwin Obaseki could become the party’s flagbearer in the coming election.
Mr Obaseki was disqualified on Friday by the All Progressives Congress (APC) screening committee from contesting in the party’s primary slated for June 22.
He was disqualified on the basis of discrepancies in his names and certificates and for taking the party to court in contravention of the party’s rules.
“The PDP ticket is not won on the pages of newspapers. Our members decide who will be their governors or representatives,” Secondus said.
The PDP national chair berated the APC, saying an incumbent governor should not be treated that way.
“For now, we are not against anyone who wants to join us. Our doors are open and if he decides to join us as an individual, we will welcome him. That’s the only thing I can say for now,” he said.
Obaseki is yet to say if he will be seeking re-election on the PDP platform, however, he has said he would not be appealing his disqualification.
