Former director-general of Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Organisation Doyin Okupe has said he and the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi agreed he would not be part of the government if he won the election.
In a statement shared on X on Monday, Mr Okupe asked the general public to verify his claim from Mr Obi.
“I supported Peter Obi out of commitment to patriotism and nationalistic fervour, not because I don’t know who I am in national politics or where I come from,” he wrote.
“I told Peter Obi and we both agreed that I will not hold any position in his govt if he won. Pl Obi is alive, kindly verify. And if this is not true, let Peter Obi publicly say I am lying.”
Okupe, a former presidential spokesman, said those criticising him for supporting President Bola Tinubu’s economic recovery plan are ignorant.
He said he’s been in politics for too long for him to pin his political future on Obi’s personal ambition.
He also said he believes in Tinubu’s “political adroitness and administrative capacity and competence,” adding that if given the necessary support, Tinubu will do well.
