Former vice-presidential candidate Peter Obi has congratulated Akinwumi Adesina on his re-election as the president of African Development Bank (AfDB) while expressing hopes that his second tenure in the position would yield more blessings to Nigeria and Africa in general.
In a statement on Thursday evening, Mr Obi said he was elated by the news of Adesina’s re-election. He further said he believed Adesina would use his second tenure to serve Africa and achieve a better economic environment for the continent.
“Akinwunmi Adesina’s re-election as the President of African Development Bank is a huge blessing to Nigeria and Africa in general. This second tenure obviously gives him the opportunity and the platform to greatly change the economic environment of Africa for the better.
“I congratulate him on his re-election as AfDB’s President and wish him a fruitful and productive stay in office,” he said.
Reminding Adesina of the economic challenges facing the world especially Africa as occasioned by the global pandemic, Obi urged him to give in his best in ensuring that Africa’s economy is revived and a greater percentage of Africa’s poor, moved out of poverty.
The former Anambra State governor underscored the critical role AfDB plays in strengthening Africa’s economy and encouraged Adesina to draw on his years of experience in banking, agricultural and rural development to drive the train of Africa’s economy to prosperity.
Adesina was re-elected on Thursday at the bank’s virtual annual general meeting.
