Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has donated N10 million to the College of Nursing Sciences, St Joseph Hospital, Adazi-Nnukwu in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra.
Mr Obi, a former governor of Anambra, gave N10 million cheque to bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Awka Most Rev. Dr Paulinus Ezeokafor.
According to Obi, nurses are crucial to the nation’s health sector given the enormity and importance of their work.
“Institutions like this should get budgetary allocation because of the great work you are doing, trying to train these nurses who are always there with the patients,” he said.
“We cannot talk about healthcare, which is very important to national development, without talking about healthcare workers.
“I have heard what the head of nursing department in the school has said. I want to assure you that we will come back.
“Training these people is helping to protect our future. If we do not train them today, they will become a threat to us.”
Responding Bishop Ezeokafor thanked Obi for the gesture to the institution and the church.
On social media, Obi wrote, “Different health organizations have continued to warn about the impending shortage of health care workers, especially nurses, on the global level. By investing in their training, we will be able to produce enough to meet our needs and contribute in managing the global shortage.”
