In a message shared on Twitter on Sunday, Mr Obi said Atoye was a known voice in the civil society space, adding that he was troubled by the news of his death.
Atoye, who was the executive director of Adopt A Goal Initiative, died last Thursday at the age of 42.
He reportedly died of lung cancer in Abuja.
“I was saddened by the news of Ariyo-Dare Atoye’s death. He was a human rights activist, a known voice in the civil society space, and he contributed greatly to the signing of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2022,” Obi, who began his presidential campaign on Saturday in Nasarawa, wrote.
“May God, who called him home at this time, grant him eternal rest and comfort his family, and all who mourn him.”
Atoye played a significant role in the passage and signing of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2022 into law through a coalition called Civil Society Partners on Electoral Reform (CiSPER).
