Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Peter Obi on Wednesday visited the Sultan of Sokoto Abubakar Sa’ad.
Mr Obi shared pictures of the visit on his official Twitter page.
“Dr Datti Baba-Ahmed and I just arrived in Sokoto for today’s Presidential Rally. Thank you all for the warm welcome,” the former Anambra State governor said in a tweet.
He also thanked the monarch for his hospitality in another post.
“Courtesy call by Datti and I on His Eminence, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto at his Palace. We’re most grateful for his hospitality and usual warmth,” another tweet signed by Obi read.
The LP presidential candidate reminded the monarch that they have known each other for four decades.
“Your Eminence, if there is anyone that knows me the most in this room it is you. We have known each other for over 40 years,” Obi said.
The visit comes two weeks after the Sultan distanced himself from a message circulating on social media that he had endorsed Obi for president.
The message quoted the Sultan as saying “Hold me responsible if Peter Obi didn’t perform well. The problem of the North is from the North, not Peter Obi or an Igbo man. It will be worst and deadly for the North if Tinubu wins.”
A member of the sultan’s media team Bashir Adefaka, however, dismissed the purported endorsement, saying his principal is a multifaceted leader whose doors are open to all aspirants across all parties.
