Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Monday visited a woman attacked in Lagos during the presidential and National Assembly elections on February 25.
Suspected thugs attacked Jennifer Efidi at her polling unit in Surulere, Lagos.
The thugs reportedly destroyed ballot boxes while the voters were exercising their franchise and attacked those who attempted to restrain them, injuring Mrs Efidi in the face in the process.
Undeterred by the incident, Efidi voted after receiving first aid treatment. Her story immediately went viral.
Obi acknowledged her bravery and resoluteness and referred to her as one of the great icons of Nigeria’s democracy.
The former Anambra State governor said in a tweet: “Today, I visited Mrs Jennifer Efidi. She was attacked on 25th February in an attempt to stop her from voting, but she stood her ground. Jennifer is one of the great icons of Nigeria’s democracy.
“She is my point of contact with every Nigerian who suffered a similar fate in their bid to exercise their voting rights, and contribute to a new Nigeria. Like many Nigerians, I acknowledge her bravery and resoluteness. Jennifer is a true manifestation of Profiles in Courage for a new Nigeria.”
Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos Olajide Adediran aka Jandor had earlier visited Mrs Efidi.
Jandor wrote about his visit on Instagram, “Months after we first raised alarm about election related violence, Mrs. Bina Jennifer Efidi became a victim of the ruling party’s wickedness. I visited her today to applaud her bravery and resilience to exercise her franchise in order to unseat the present wickedness called government.”
He encouraged all Nigerians to draw hope from her bravery and prepare themselves to defend their votes through the election process.
“We have no choice but to win and birth a breath of fresh air,” he added.
