Plateau United edged Niger Tornadoes 2-1 in the Nigeria Professional Football League 2015/16 season opener on Saturday.
With majority of the games billed for Sunday, all eyes were at the Rwang Pam Stadium, Jos as Nigeria’s elite club competition finally resumed.
The 1991 Federation Cup champions, who were making a return to the top flight after a four-year absence, had enough firepower in their arsenal to fend-off any upset from fellow new comers Tornadoes.
Plateau made a dream start after just 15 minutes when Charles Okafor nodded home a corner-kick to send about 15,000 fans into rapturous mood.
But their ecstasy only lasted for a while before Kunle Issa stunned the home crowd with an equaliser for the Minna-based side five minutes past the hour mark.
The home side however went in search of the winning goal afterwards and their effort was rewarded in the 87th when Ibeh Johnson scored to put the game to bed.
Defending champions, Enyimba FC, visit Rivers United while 2014 champions, Kano Pillars host Enugu Rangers in what could be tagged the star games on Sunday.
