Pochettino confronts referee, Mike Dean, after Tottenham suffer loss to Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur coach, Mauricio Pochettino, angrily confronted referee, Mike Dean, after his side suffered a 2-1 loss to Burnley on Saturday.

It was the North London’s seventh Premier League defeat of the season, which all but ends their title hopes.

Harry Kane had equalised for Spurs after Chris Wood’s opener, only for Ashley Barnes to turn home with seven minutes remaining, handing Sean Dyche’s resurgent side all three points.

The result leaves Spurs five points behind both Liverpool and Manchester City – ahead of the Reds’ trip to Manchester United on Sunday.

The flashpoint occurred at full-time as Pochettino and his staff made their way onto the field.

After an initial exchange of words, Dean asked an unhappy Pochettino “what’s your problem?”

The Spurs chief responded “you know what”, in response to Dean, before appearing to walk away.

However, something was said during that moment, at which point Pochettino and his irate assistant, Jesus Perez, returned and got in the face of the official and his assistants.

Perez vehemently jabbed his finger towards the face of Dean, who could be seen telling the Spurs boss to “go away”.

Pochettino continued to vent his anger, within a few inches of his face, before being pulled away from Dean by Burnley defender Phil Jones.

Speaking after the game, Pochettino dodged question about the incident, but stated his belief that Spurs’ title chances are over after the loss.

“Of course we made a few mistakes – we don’t deserve the defeat, but that is football.

“I think it’s so important to understand a game that for us was so important. I believe it’s going to be decisive.

“But I think the emotions, everyone was nervous, some time we find answers and try to justify the defeat.”

On his behaviour, the Argentine said: “It’s not normally how I behave. After the game, where we lose, and it’s difficult to be a real contender.

“For me, we are really disappointed.

On whether he expects to be charged by the FA, Pochettino told Sky Sports: “I think I will accept everything that happened.

“I hope not, but fine.”
