Police arraign 2 men for allegedly stealing cell phone, recharge cards

The police, on Monday, arraigned two men, Ayeni Sunday, 22, and Awolusi Bamidele, 27, at an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a cell phone and recharge cards worth N23,500.

The defendants, whose addresses were not made available, are facing one-count charge of stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp Olubu Apata, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on Oct. 11 at about 12 p.m. at No. 32, Olorunsogo Street, Ado-Ekiti.

Apata alleged that the duo went to the shop of one Mrs Janet Fatoba pretending to buy a padlock.

“Sunday and Bamidele went to the shop of the complainant with the pretence to buy a padlock; they stole one Infinix Hot 6 phone valued N33,500 and a purse containing recharge cards worth N23,500,” he said.

Apata said the offence contravened Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty.

The magistrate, Mrs Kehinde Awosika, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N50,000 each with one surety each in like sum.

Awosika, who said the sureties must be a level 14 officer in the civil service, adjourned the case until Dec.3 for hearing.
