The police in Lagos have arrested a team of officers in the Anti Cultism Unit who were involved in the killing of a young man, Kolade Johnson.
The command’s spokesman, Bala Elkana, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Monday.
Johnson was shot by policemen on Sunday when the officers raided Olu Aboderin Street, Onipetesi area of Lagos allegedly in search of youths dressed wildly and wearing dreadlocks.
Johnson had attempted to resist the arrest of his friend who had just watched a live English Premiership League football match between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur when he was shot.
The victim was taken to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) but was pronounced dead on arrival by doctors.
Elkana said the account of eye witnesses helped in identifying the team which fled the scene immediately after the incident.
“Members of the team suspected to be involved in the shooting have since been arrested and are currently in police custody undergoing interrogation.
“They will be subjected to internal disciplinary procedures, and may be prosecuted in conventional court if implicated by ongoing investigation.
“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Zubairu Muazu calls for calm, assuring that justice will prevail in this case.
“The CP also condoles with the family, friends and well wishers of Kolade Johnson,” he said.
The spokesman also said the CP had promised to initiate reforms in the Anti Cultism Squad for effective service delivery, particularly with respect to adherence to human rights and proficiency in the use of firearms.
