Police barricade Emir Sanusi’s palace

Emir Muhammadu Sanusi Lamido Sanusi

Police officers on Friday barricaded the palace of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, preventing him from attending a royal ceremony in Bichi Local Government Area.

The ceremony was to mark the presentation of a staff of office to the new District Head of Bichi, but sources within the Kano Emirate disclosed that security operatives, including armoured personnel carriers (APCs), blocked the palace entrance and restricted movement.

“The Emir has been on the phone trying to understand what is happening. He was prepared to leave for the ceremony when the security operatives arrived and ordered him to remain indoors,” a palace source quoted by Channels TV said.

Efforts by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf to resolve the situation reportedly encountered obstacles. According to sources, the governor’s delegation was denied entry into the palace.

The situation extended to the Bichi event venue which was also cordoned off by security personnel, leaving attendees and organisers stranded.

Kano police spokesman Abdullahi Haruna declined to comment on the development.
