The Inspector -General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has ordered the immediate arrest of Kassim Afegbua, media aide to former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.
Mr Afegbua is wanted over the statement he released on behalf of his principal on Sunday, calling on President Muhammadu Buhari not to seek re-election in 2019.
Another statement purportedly signed by Babangida denies authorising Afegbua’s statement.
The police, in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer Jimoh Moshood on Monday in Abuja, said the former Edo State commissioner for information is, therefore, wanted for making false statement.
Mr Moshood’s statement reads: “The IGP has ordered the arrest of Kassim Afegbua for making false statements, defamation of character and for an act capable of instigating public disturbance throughout the country.
“He is therefore declared wanted by the Nigeria Police Force and should report at the nearest police station anywhere he is in the country.”
Afegbua, a former supporter of President Buhari, insists Babangida approved the statement he released.
He has also been quoted as saying the police did not contact him before declaring him wanted.
