The police in Cross River on Tuesday said it foiled a kidnap attempt on Ani Esin, security adviser to the governor of the state, Ben Ayade.
Cross River police spokesperson, Irene Ugbo, told the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) that the incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Tuesday in Calabar.
A suspect was killed as he attempted to escape in one of the vehicles removed from Mr Esin’s house.
The gunmen had stormed Esin’s residence in an attempt to kidnap him before the police commissioner, Austin Agbonlahor, led policemen to his rescue.
“The incident happened at the early hours of today. It took the personal intervention of the state Commissioner of Police who led a team of officers to foil the abduction.
“One of the suspects died while trying to escape in one of the vehicles removed from Esin’s house.
“We rescued the victim and he is presently in a stable condition in a hospital,” Ugbo said.
