Police in Edo have invited the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Olumide Akpata and chairman of Edo LP Kelly Ogbaloi over the violence at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) last Friday.
Spokesman of the Command Chidi Nwabuzor stated this on Thursday in Benin.
Akpata was attacked by some students when he visited his alma mater (UNIBEN) for an event organised by the university’s Senior Staff Club.
Nwabuzor said Akpata, a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and Ogbaloi would interact with investigators at the political desk section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at the Command’s headquarters in Benin.
Ogbaloi accompanied Akpata to the event at UNIBEN.

The Edo LP chairman, according to The Nation, wondered why his presence was also needed at the police headquarters in Benin.
He was quoted as saying: “Akpata is our governorship candidate, but UNIBEN invited him, to honour him on a personal note. I did not sign surety of his safety there. I do not know why the police are also inviting me, and to come with Akpata.
“The police ought to have done their background checks, as his being honoured by UNIBEN has nothing to do with our party. So, I do not know why I am being asked to come along with Akpata to the police command headquarters in Benin.”
Meanwhile, the university’s management earlier condemned the attack on Akpata and set up a committee to probe the incident.
