Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has said that the police and military officers are not bound to obey President Muhammadu Buhari when he gives “unlawful” orders.
Atiku said this on Tuesday at the party’s special National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja in reaction to Buhari’s controversial statement on Monday that he had directed the police and military such that anyone who snatches ballot boxes does it at the “expense of his life”.
He accused the president of being power hungry in his desire to retain his seat.
“I want to direct this message to our military commanders and officers. You know that the military commanders and officers are not bound to execute orders that are manifestly unlawful.
“This is the law, this is the tradition in the military; so if you are a professional military officer and soldier and also a policeman, you are not bound to execute an order that is manifestly unlawful, no matter who issues that order,” Atiku said.
