Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has accused the Imo State Police Command of refusing to release singer Speed Darlington or take him before a judge to face trial.
Speed Darlington was initially arrested in October over a petition allegedly written against him by fellow singer Burna Boy. He was re-arrested in November in Owerri for jumping bail.
In a post shared on his X page on Monday, Adeyanju disclosed that despite efforts to secure his client’s release, the police have refused to comply, claiming Speed Darlington failed to show up when previously granted bail.
He wrote: “The @PoliceNG @PoliceNG_CRU have refused to release Speed Darlington or take him before a judge to face trial on the childish excuse that the last time they released him to me, he travelled to the US. This narrative is false because we told them he was going to the US to return.”
On November 29, Adeyanju revealed that Speed Darlington had been transferred from Owerri to Abuja following his arrest upon returning to Nigeria for a show.
The lawyer further alleged that Burna Boy, known for his hit song ‘Ye’, was behind the rapper’s arrest.
