Super Eagles defender, Leon Balogun, has expressed his delight after captaining the team against Algeria on Friday evening.
Balogun, 29, for the first time, was handed the rare privilege of leading his country in the dead-rubber World Cup qualifier away to the Desert Foxes.
In the absence of regular skipper, Mikel Obi, who didn’t even make the matchday squad and his injured deputy, Ogenyi Onazi, the Mainz star was given the armband by Gernot Rohr.
And as you would expect, he didn’t disappoint.
Balogun was impressive in his new role as Nigeria were forced to a 1-1 draw.
After the encounter, the 10-capped Eagle couldn’t hide his joy, as he immediately took to Twitter to savour the moment.
Balogun was glad to have avoided defeat, paying special tribute to the ill-stricken goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme, goalscorer, John Ogu and newbie, Ola Aina.
Proud to have captained my country today and remain unbeaten at @FIFAWorldCup qualifiers. The road to Russia was an exciting and even more successful one. I dedicate this achievement to our team mate @Carl_Ikeme who started this journey with us. This one’s for you bro ?????

Bar injuries, Balogun is almost certain of a place in Russia alongside defensive partner, William Troost-Ekong.
This will be his first participation at any major tournament for Nigeria since making his debut against Mexico in March 2014.
