Qed review: Katapot – Reekado Banks

Reekado Banks

By Bisola Bello

Reekado BanksReekado Banks’ single ‘Katapot’ produced by hit maker, Don Jazzy, talks about a man that appreciates his girlfriend for loving him despite all his faults. Away from the songs that preach excess of cash and girls, this track preaches love and understanding. The song also talks about busybodies whose main aim is to destroy a working relationship.

Reekado begins with a chorus that says no matter what the enemy says or does, the love that he and his partner share is one that is here to stay. Lyrically, the chorus is very sound; it does not carry lots of repetitive lines like most songs and the main theme of the song was realised from the chorus.

Chorus:

If dem like make dem fire katapot of envy

Dem throw us bomb of jealousy

Dem stand dey eye our progress

See dem no fit put asunder yea yea

If dem like make dem fire katapot of envy

Dem throw us bomb of jealousy

Dem stand dey eye our progress

See dey cannot stop our love oh

The first verse is so emotional that it can pass for a love poem. The verse praises a supportive girlfriend who serves as a strength and shield. In this day and age, many say it is actually rare but apparently Reekado has seen one that stood by him during the bad times, not that he has been linked with any female partner.

He sings:

See no be me fine pass oh my pretty baby girl

Still you stand by me even though I make you vex….

Oh why why you love me like this

Tell me why baby why I deserve this oh aii

Baby baby ah…hmm hmm hmm

Mo gbo pe kikan kikan ni o kan ju

My baby baby no dey kanju

Even when your friends dey ranju

As we dey good dem dey mor ju

You still respect my hustle

I count on you, u no dey burst my bubble eh

Girl, there will be no me

Without you by my side

How I want take survive

How I want live this life now only god go fit decide

Na you dey burst my bololo dada….

Dada yea ah

‘Katapot’ will make many girls go hmnnn…

Beyond the song talking about love; it also talks down haters and their attitude of wanting everything thing to go wrong in a relationship.

Reekado is 21, so what better age to talk and experience love if not now. Female ‘Reek’ addicts sing the song with their eyes rolling.

This track is a huge step up from his previous single ‘Chop Am’. Embedded in the lyrics are understandable words that can connect to the listener.

Any Don Jazzy produced song is most definitely determined to be a hit track but Reekado also showed he is a great artiste and accompanied the beat with not anyhow words but a story of love.

The second verse affirms the singer’s love and also professes a promise that says forever and ever.

Oh baby I will tell the world,

You are my lady nothing dey fit do my lover

They cannot put asunder

No never

So happy oh

Na me and you forever

And the day after

Oh oh wooh wooh wooh

Oh baby, dem no know, dem no know

Oh we almost give it up….give it up

Oh we never had it all….had it all

Baby, baby, dem no know….dem no know

Se bi aye lon’ pariwo….pariwo

Baby, I love you gidigan gidigan

Oh aii aii aii aii…ah ah oh aii aii aii aii…ah ah

Directed by Unlimited L.A, the video of the song shows Reekado in an all-white ensemble at the market. As he walks past different people to meet his love, he is met with distasteful faces who hit him with various things like eggs, pepper and fish intestines.

In parables, the video preaches the lyrics of the songs and represents the people at the market as individuals not in support of his progress or relationship.

This track is remarkable and Reekado topped various musical charts with this song. It is no wonder he won the 2015 City People Award for Most Promising Act of the Year.
