Actress and politician Rita Daniels has announced her resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing inconsistencies in the party’s administration.
Rita, who is the mother of actress Regina Daniels, made the announcement on Monday on Instagram, sharing a video along with her resignation letter.
She wrote, “I, Hon. Rita Daniels, this day, 2nd of February, 2025, tender my letter of resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) due to inconsistencies in the party’s administration and a deviation from its stated commitment to democratic principles and inclusivity. It’s my belief that the party’s actions contradict its founding ideals.”
She accused the party of undermining democratic processes, saying its constitution, which promotes good governance, justice and equity, was being disregarded.
Rita claimed that shortly after her announcement, the PDP in Aniocha South Ward One suspended Rita indefinitely over alleged anti-party activities.
She added that Ward chairman John Nwona said a committee had been set up to investigate her actions and determine whether she should be expelled, while urging other members to remain committed to the party.
Rita’s resignation comes just days after her son-in-law, Senator Ned Nwoko, formally exited the PDP. Nwoko, who represents Delta North in the National Assembly, resigned from the party in a letter dated January 30, 2025.
He cited deep divisions and internal wrangling within the PDP as reasons for his departure, adding that the party’s current structure in Delta State had hindered his ability to deliver on campaign promises.
Nwoko also referenced a recent physical altercation among party leaders as further proof of the crisis within the PDP. Despite his exit, he expressed gratitude for the platform the party provided during his election.
