Real Madrid superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, has offered to contribute financial support to help the victims of wildfires that have caused havoc in his home island, Madeira.
The former Manchester United forward was born in Funchal, Portugal’ sixth largest city and capital of autonomous region of Madeira .
Fires have been blazing on the Island for the past three days. Four people were reported dead and more than 1000 were said to either been injured or displaced.
There is a conjecture that the blaze, which started outside the city may have been fired intentionally and the heavy wind has done the rest of the damage.
So far several suspects have already been arrested. However, the Madeira Island continues to fight the blaze.
And Ronaldo, 31, who is well known for his benevolence aside his great football skills, has volunteered to help.
He made the offer during an emotional phone call to island president, Miguel Albuquerque, but the amount is still unclear.
After Wednesday’s conversation, he posted a message on his Facebook page revealing his pain over the devastating fires in Madeira and other parts of Portugal, especially the north.
He said: “It is with an aching heart that I’m seeing what’s happening in Madeira and other parts of the country.
“My support goes out with a thank you to all those firefighters who are bravely risking their lives to save so many others. I am with you.”
In 2015, Ronaldo became the most charitable sportsperson in the world.
Last year after the Nepal earthquake, which killed over 8,000 people, Ronaldo donated ÂŁ5million to the latter to help their aid efforts in the country.
He recently gave his €600,000 UEFA Champions League win bonus to good causes.
