Super Eagles caretaker coach, Salisu Yusuf, says he is “honoured” to be considered for the role on a permanent basis.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Friday picked Yusuf as one of three candidates as likely substantive coach.
Frenchman Paul Le Guen and Belgian tacticians Tom Saintfiet are the other two.
This is in view of the forthcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers which pits the three-time African champions alongside heavyweights, Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia.
Yusuf, 54, steered the country to victory in two international friendlies against Mali and Luxembourg in May and is ecstatic to be given a look.
“I’m honoured by the trust and confidence shown by the federation and Nigerians in general that I can shoulder the responsibility at this level,” said the former El Kanemi Warriors gaffer.
“I hope to be a worthy representative of all Nigerian coaches and the game in the country.”
Yusuf has had three stints as assistant coach of the team – first under Samson Siasia, then Stephen Keshi and Sunday Oliseh.
However, the former Enyimba manager says he wants out of that role and prefers the full-time job instead.
“All the coaches shortlisted are very experienced, but I am convinced I can do the job,” he said.
“I am therefore looking forward to the interview on Monday.”
The NFF will announce their choice after completing the interview.
