Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday met with Queen Camilla at the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition awards ceremony.
Mr Sanwo-Olu was accompanied by his wife, Ibijoke, and government officials.
At the event, the governor emphasised the importance of literacy and empowering young minds.
He said he was grateful to the Royal Commonwealth Society and Her Majesty for their acknowledgement and was looking forward to celebrating the winners’ achievements.
His post on Instagram read, “My wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwoolu, my team and I were guests of Her Majesty The Queen of England, Camilla at the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2023 Award Ceremony hosted by Her Majesty The Queen Consort, at Buckingham Palace today.
“According to The Royal Commonwealth Society, the year 2023 is a particularly special year for the competition, marking 140 years of celebrating and championing youth voice, literacy, expression, and creativity across the Commonwealth.

“I’m indeed proud to say that Lagos State Government was part of the competition’s success story this year with her support, which saw the entries jump to a record-breaking 34,924 entries, making it 9,000 more than the previous year from 50 Commonwealth countries, the most in the history of the competition.
“Top participating countries at this year’s competition included Bangladesh, Ghana, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom.
“We will continue to partner with, and support organizations whose focus is the continuous development of our dear State, and the citizens.”
This comes after Sanwo-Olu and other Lagos government officials partook in the United Kingdom’s Lord Mayor Show.
