Senate President Bukola Saraki has directed the management of the National Assembly to distribute his severance allowance to the families of Leah Sharibu and two aid workers killed by Boko Haram terrorists.
A statement by his spokesman, Yusuph Olaniyonu, on Sunday named the two murdered aid workers as Hussaini Khoisan and Hauwa Liman.
Saraki, whose official severance package is N7.5million, said children of late senators in need of financial assistance would also benefit from the allowance.
The Senate president said a trust fund should be instituted by National Assembly management for children of late Senators who may require financial assistance for more studies.
The lawmaker said his decision to use the severance allowance to support the selected victims of Boko Haram insurgency was because their cases represented some of the most touching humanitarian issues debated at the plenary during four years of the Eighth Senate.
Twenty percent of the severance allowance will go to Leah Sharibu’s family while 20 percent each will go to the families of the murdered aid workers.
The remaining 40 percent will be used to set up the Trust Fund.
“It is my hope that this TRUST FUND should grow with more contributions from my dear colleagues, present, past and future, who may be moved to put in additional money into it,” Saraki said.
