Security aides to the late former Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, may have clues to his killers, security sources have said.
Mr Badeh had four security aides with him when he was shot dead.
Credible sources have now said that the aides might possess critical information that could unravel the circumstances surrounding Badeh’s assassination.
Senior security officials queried the alleged failure of the security aides to nail the attackers, noting that something was not right about the way only Badeh was killed out of the seven people that were attacked.
“The security aides, whose responsibility was to protect the ex-CDS, are central to the investigation. Any investigator who knows his job would be milking them like cows by now,” a source said.
There were reports that the police had interrogated the security detail believed to be Air Force operatives, but it could not be ascertained whether the men were taken into custody for failing to protect their principal.
The Punch reports that a security analyst, Ben Okezie, sad this was the first time a top retired military officer was killed in such a brutal manner, noting that the investigators must have interrogated the ex-CDS’ security aides, driver and family members.
Mr Okezie criticised the police for announcing the arrest of suspects when they had not concluded their investigation.
“For the police to rush to announce that they had arrested suspects who they wanted to parade and for them to suspend the exercise, they have made nonsense of the investigation,” he said.
The security expert cautioned the police against bungling the investigation, adding that the force could seek the assistance of the Department of State Services if it felt overwhelmed by the task.
