First lady Aisha Buhari deactivated her Twitter account on Friday night hours after her husband’s administration announced the suspension of Twitter.
Mrs Buhari said she would now be deactivating the account and prayed the country would see more days.
“I will be deactivating my Twitter account for now. Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she tweeted at 11:59pm on Friday.
Minutes later, the account, which had over one million followers as of June 4, was no longer available on the social media platform.
At the time of the deactivation, that of her husband President Muhammadu Buhari was still active.
Mrs Buhari, who is known for her fierce criticisms of her husband’s government, has been unusually quiet since returning to the country earlier this year after six months away.
The Federal Government suspended Twitter after the micro-blogging site removed some of the president’s Tuesday tweets which made reference to the Nigerian Civil War of 1967-70.
Minister of information and culture Lai Mohammed cited the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence” as reason for the suspension.
The suspension took effect at midnight Saturday. The government did not announce the duration of the suspension.
