A former Senate leader, Senator Ali Ndume, has said the adoption of Senator Ahmad Lawan for senate president of 9th Assembly, by the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was unconstitutional.
Ndume told journalists on Tuesday morning that the party’s national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, had on Monday night at a dinner with President Muhammadu Buhari at Aso Rock informed senators-elect that Lawan was the next Senate president.
He said the party’s move to endorse Lawan was contrary to Section 50 (1) (A) of the 1999 constitution (as amended) which gave senators-elect the right to elect their leaders on the day of inauguration.
Ndume added that he would consult leaders of the party in the North East and his colleagues who are in support of his aspiration, before he takes a decision.
“All my colleagues at the occasion yesterday (Monday) were shocked when Adams Oshiomhole unilaterally announced his decision to endorse Lawan as candidate of the party.
“It is an unpopular decision because I am sure that President Buhari and other leaders of the party are not in support of that action. None of the stakeholders was also consulted,” Ndume said.
