Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has reacted to the order by Inspector General of Police Usman Baba that he should be arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer.
A video of an angry Seun apparently slapping the unnamed police officer on Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos went viral on Saturday.
Many social media condemned the musician’s action saying he should be arrested and prosecuted.
Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi said in a statement on Saturday night that such an act would not be tolerated.
“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, CFR has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command to arrest Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, who was captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform,” parts of the statement read.
Continuing, Mr Adejobi said the “IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly,” he added.
“IGP Usman Alkali Baba assures Nigerians that acts of contempt/disdain for symbols of authority will not be tolerated while offenders of such hideous crimes will be surely brought to book.”
Reacting to the police statement, Seun said in a post on Instagram Story that “I welcome the investigation and will give my full cooperation! I also pray to the IG that whoever is wrong should be indicted.”
The 40-year-old had earlier claimed the police officer tried to kill him and his family.
