No fewer than seven persons lost their lives in a tragic accident that occurred early Saturday morning near the NIPCO filling station axis on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The crash, which happened at about 7:00 a.m., involved three vehicles — a Mack truck with registration number SEY 363 YY, a tanker marked T2900 LA, and a commercial bus bearing LSD 180 YA.

It led to a major traffic gridlock, leaving commuters stranded for hours while emergency responders worked to clear the wreckage and attend to victims.

Spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State Florence Okpe confirmed the incident in a statement released in Abeokuta.

According to Mrs Okpe, a total of 15 individuals — comprising 13 men and two women — were involved in the crash. Seven persons died on the spot while four others sustained injuries.

She attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speed and loss of control by the driver of the Mack truck, which reportedly rammed into the other two vehicles.

“The injured victims were taken to Divine Touch Hospital and Glory Center Hospital, Ibafo, while the deceased were taken to Idera morgue Sagamu,” she said.

Sector commander of the FRSC in Ogun Akinwumi Fasakin expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged commuters with missing loved ones who were expected to have arrived by morning to contact the FRSC office in Ibafo for further information.

This is coming one month after at least three people died and others were injured in a tanker explosion on the Otedola Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
