Some supporters of Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and those of his political opponent Eyitayo Jedege clashed on Tuesday at the High Court Road, Akure, Ondo State capital.
The supporters engaged in a fight as the court held its first sitting to hear the petition filed by Mr Jegede, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against Mr Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In his petition, Jegede said the governor, who defeated him in the October election, was not validly nominated by the APC.
Eyewitnesses say many people were injured in the fracas. Shop owners near the court were also forced to close for a couple of hours for safety.
Ondo police spokesman Tee-Leo Ikoro told Premium Times the incident was not serious.
“It was the supporters of the politicians and the two political parties that tried to misbehave. It was really nothing serious,” he said.
