Supporters and critics of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde have taken to social media to throw banters over the reported leaky roof of Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan.
The Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) reports that videos it obtained on Wednesday revealed a leaking roof through which water crept in and flooded some of the stadium’s stands, preventing spectators from occupying them.
Oyo State Government on Wednesday commissioned the complex with a special football match marking the reopening of the 30-year-old stadium after remodeling which cost N5.58billion.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Governors Rotimi Akerdolu (Ondo) and Godwin Obaseki (Edo) graced the event.
In an Instagram post on Thursday, Mr Makinde thanked those who were present at the launch of the sports complex.
“I thank our guests, NK Tabor Sezana of Slovenia and former Super Eagles Players 94/98, for honouring our invitation to the international friendly and novelty matches, respectively. I enjoyed being part of the novelty match despite the rain,” he wrote.
“…On a lighter note, as I predicted a year ago, our darling 3SC beat the visiting Slovenian side, NK Tabor Sežana by a whopping 4:0. We look forward to hosting more international matches in our FIFA rated stadium.”
However, on Twitter, supporters of the governor and critics clashed.
“A certain Unilag Graduate tagged Engr Seyi Makinde. He claimed to have remodeled a stadium with N5.3bn and guess what. It’s a swimming pool right now,” @omoba_scholes tweeted.
“When nxt someone say to you there’s no change in governance of Oyo State or No development since Seyi Makinde took over in Oyo State. Just tell him/her to see his/her Doctor. I rest my case. Thanks,” @O_RidwanJayeola tweeted.
Journalist Fisayo Soyombo wrote, “I want Govt Makinde’s loyalists & PR specialists to please send me a video of a ‘foreign’ stadium that was flooded ON THE DAY OF ITS COMMISSIONING. I also hope they can send me videos of rain leaking THROUGH THE ROOF of the stands at those stadiums.”
“Of all the things to criticize Seyi Makinde for, a waterlogged pitch,” @oluafolabi tweeted.
