Shari’ah Court dismisses adultery case against commissioner

Court of law

The Upper Shari’ah Court in Kano has dismissed an adultery case against the Jigawa State commissioner for special duties Auwal Sankara citing lack of merit.

The case filed by Nasiru Buba accused Sankara of having an illicit affair with Buba’s wife Tasleem Baba-Nabegu.

Judge Ibrahim Sarki-Yola ruled that the allegations were unsupported by evidence.

According to the findings of an investigation by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, there was no proof of any illicit relationship between Sankara and Baba-Nabegu. The judge further criticised the Kano Hisbah Board for failing to properly investigate the case before bringing it to court.

“Since the complainant and his lawyers are not present to challenge the submission by the police, I have no choice but to strike out the case,” the judge stated.

Sankara’s legal counsel Sadam Suleiman welcomed the ruling, affirming that his client had always maintained his innocence. “The court has affirmed this by clearing his name based on the police investigation,” Suleiman said.

However, counsel for Baba-Nabegu Rabiu Shu’aibu indicated plans to pursue defamation charges against Nasiru Buba for making false allegations. “We will discuss with our client to explore the possibility of filing a case against Nasiru Buba, as he has defamed her name,” Shu’aibu said.
